2006 – CANADA 16, ITALY 0

Canada’s big line was its big line against the host Italians, with Gillian Apps, Cherie Piper and Hayley Wickenheiser combining for 17 points in the one-sided victory.

Wickenheiser led the way with a hat trick and three assists, Piper had a goal and five assists, and Apps finished with two goals and three assists for the Canadians, who opened defence of their Olympic gold medal with a win over the host country.

“Apps and Wick were two of my favourite linemates to play with,” Piper says. “It was easy to play with them. Our skill sets complimented each other and we were able to create lots of offence, but also take care of our defensive responsibilities.”

After Caroline Ouellette owned the first period, scoring a hat trick in the first 6:53 to help Canada to a 5-0 lead after one, Piper’s line took over in the second; she picked up a goal and two assists in the frame as the Canadians led 9-0 after two.

Piper picked up her fourth and fifth assists in the third period, and Apps added her two goals in the final frame.

In total, 11 different players scored goals and 15 had at least a point, while Kim St-Pierre needed to make just five saves for the shutout, including just two over the final 40 minutes.

When asked about the Torino crowd’s reaction to such a one-sided game, Piper remembers: “The Italian crowd was very gracious. They were cheering for them as well as cheering for us when we had nice plays.”

Other Games

1968 – Canada scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and beat the United States 3-2. Ray Cadieux had a pair of goals to pace the Canadian offence in Grenoble, France.

1984 – Darren Lowe, Craig Redmond and Dave Gagner scored goals in a span of 9:55 to help Canada fight back from a one-goal deficit after two periods and knock off Finland 4-2. Bruce Driver had the other goal for the Canadians.

1998 – Danielle Goyette opened and closed the scoring for Canada, and Nancy Drolet added a goal and an assist to lead Canada over Sweden 5-3 for its third consecutive win in Nagano, Japan.

2002 – Canada debuted its black heritage jersey, scoring five times on the power play in a 7-0 tournament-opening win over Kazakhstan. Hayley Wickenheiser and Vicky Sunohara scored two goals each for the Canadians, while Danielle Goyette had a goal and two assists.

2018 – Rebecca Johnson and Melodie Daoust scored a pair of goals apiece and Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped all 18 shots she faced in her Olympic debut as Canada blanked the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 in the preliminary-round opener in PyeongChang. Marie-Philip Poulin—in her first Olympics as captain—picked up three assists.

2022 – Canada eased past Sweden in the quarterfinals, getting hat tricks from Brianne Jenner and Sarah Fillier, and four assists apiece from Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse. The Canadians scored early and often, taking a 9-0 lead before the game’s midway mark. Emerance Maschmeyer earned the shutout with an 11-save effort.

1992 – CANADA 6, SWITZERLAND 1

Eric Lindros announced his arrival in Albertville, scoring twice and adding two helpers as Canada defeated Switzerland. After an under-the-radar performance in Canada’s first game of the Games two nights earlier, Lindros – still a few weeks shy of his 19th birthday – made his physical presence felt with several big hits.

Canada also got two goals from Joe Juneau and one each from Gord Hynes and Wally Schreiber.

Lindros had been drafted by the Quebec Nordiques the previous spring, but refusing to sign with the NHL team, he joined the national team instead. His first of eight career Olympic goals came on the power play just over three minutes in when he powered his way to the net to deflect Juneau’s initial shot.

His physical presence was a game-changer. “Eric was a big, strong kid,” says Hynes. “He was strong below the hash marks and in front of the net, and had loads of presence that everybody else was concerned about.”

Three goals in under three minutes early in the second broke the game open. Juneau scored his second late in the period to give Canada a 5-0 after 40 minutes over an opponent they admittedly knew little about before watching video the day before. “We certainly didn’t go in blind,” says Hynes. “[Coach Dave] King and his staff had us super well prepared.”

The Swiss broke up Sean Burke’s shutout in the opening minute of the third, before Hynes finished off the scoring in the closing minutes of the game with a slap shot that beat the goalie glove side.

The extra media attention that followed Lindros was not unwelcomed by his teammates. “Back then the Canadian Olympic Team didn’t have the big limelight like it does today with the NHL players going to the Olympics,” says Juneau. “When we have Sean Burke and then Eric Lindros joining the team, it brought a lot of positives to our team on and off the ice.”

And the Games, overall, gave Juneau an experience he still appreciates. “Even though I played 13 years in NHL and went to Stanley Cup Final twice, the Olympic Games in 1992 are the highlight of my hockey years as a player.”

1936 – In one of the greatest upsets in Olympic hockey history, Great Britain defeats Canada 2-1, and hands the four-time defending champion its first-ever Olympics loss. Edgar Brenchley beats goaltender Dinty Moore for the game-winner with only 72 seconds left.

2014 – Meghan Agosta, Jayna Hefford and Rebecca Johnston score in a span of 7:09 in the third period to blow open a scoreless game and send Canada to a 3-0 win over Finland. Shannon Szabados makes 14 saves to record the Canadians’ second-straight shutout.

2022 – Alex Grant, Ben Street and Daniel Winnik score goals 5:36 apart in the first period to lead Canada to a 5-1 win over Germany in the preliminary-round opener in Beijing. Street finishes with a goal and an assist, and Kent Johnson and Eric O’Dell contribute two helpers apiece to help the Canadians get a small measure of revenge over the Germans after their semifinal loss in 2018.

1984 – CANADA 8, AUSTRIA 1

Being the youngest to ever play for Canada at an Olympic Winter Games wasn’t enough for Kirk Muller, he needed to be the youngest to score a goal, which he did – two, in fact – to lead Canada over Austria.

One day after his 18th birthday, Muller scored the eventual game-winner on the power play 12 minutes into the first period, and made it 3-0 just 13 seconds into the second; that goal remains the third-fastest to start a period in Canadian Olympic history.

“We had a great group of guys,” Muller recalls. “We were young and had a good mix of both junior and college guys bonding together quickly. We all had the same passion and shared the same goal; to do well over at the Olympics.

“Back then Carey Wilson and Pat Flatley were sort of the veteran guys because they had some experience playing university hockey down in the States and all. It’s funny to say that those were veterans since they were only 20-something years old.”

Wilson had a goal and an assist in the win over Austria, while Flatley added a helper for the Canadians, who scored the game’s first six goals.

Dave Donnelly, Bruce Driver, Dave Tippett, Dave Gagner and Craig Redmond had the other goals for Canada, which won its second game in as many days to open the Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.

Muller, now the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, remembers the 1984 Olympics as a stepping stone towards developing his skills as both a player and coach. “Dave King was ahead of his time in many of his coaching techniques. He was big on the X’s and O’s, video and training methods.”

When asked if he thought any Canadian hockey player would ever take part in the Olympics at a younger age than him, Muller chuckled. “It’s hard to rule it out because there’s always going to be that next superstar that will roll along and make it hard not to include him.”

Other Games

1932 – Canada blanked Poland for the second time in three days in the four-team double round robin, scoring a 10-0 win to improve to a perfect 5-0 in Lake Placid. Stanley Wagner earned the shutout in his first Olympic start.

1968 – Morris Mott scored four times – the most recent four-goal game by a Canadian – and Fran Huck added two to help Canada bounce back from a loss and rout East Germany 11-0. The Canadians racked up 51 shots on goal, their fifth-most ever in a single game.

1998 – Chinese goaltender Hong Guo made 38 saves, but second-period goals from Danielle Goyette and Vicky Sunohara were enough to lead Canada to a 2-0 preliminary round win. Manon Rhéaume needed to make just eight saves for the shutout.

1998 - CANADA 13, JAPAN 0

Danielle Goyette scored a hat trick to lead Canada over host Japan as women’s hockey made its Olympic debut.

Hayley Wickenheiser scored twice and added two assists, and Stacy Wilson had a goal and three assists.

Canada outshot Japan 64-3; goalies Lesley Reddon and Manon Rhéaume both spent time in the crease to share the team’s historic win.

The significance of the game was not lost on the players, says Wilson, the team’s captain. “We enjoyed being a part of that history, knowing that it was such a big moment for women’s hockey.”

Goyette put her name in the record books 5:46 into the first period when she buried a Wickenheiser rebound for Canada’s first goal. With the score 2-0 late in the opening frame, Wickenheiser scored her first Olympic goal, with Wilson picking up the first assist.

The line of Goyette, Wickenheiser and Wilson had played together before the Games, and Wilson knew she was skating beside some skill. “I knew if I got the puck to one of them good things would happen.” The trio combined for 12 points in the game.

A six-goal second—including a goal each from Goyette, Wickenheiser and Wilson—gave Canada a 9-0 cushion after 40 minutes.

Once the game got out of hand the focus shifted to working on the small details but still pressing and playing aggressive. Four goals in the second half of the third period rounded out the scoring.

To its credit, Japan made Canada work to the final horn. “They never stopped pushing, [battling hard] in front of the net and skating hard,” says Wilson. “They always kept it clean and in the honour of a good hockey game.”

Other Games

1932 – William Cockburn recorded his second shutout in a row as Canada, represented by the Winnipeg Hockey Club, blanked Germany 5-0. Canada beat the Germans for the second time in the four-team, double round-robin tournament; it won the first meeting 4-1 two days earlier.

1936 – Canada beat Austria 5-2 and ran its unbeaten streak at the Olympics to 20 games. Canada won its third straight at these Games without taking a penalty.

1948 – Murray Dowey recorded his third straight shutout – and fifth of the Games – as Canada defeated Switzerland 3-0 to finish the round robin 7-0-1. Canada finished tied for first with Czechoslovakia but won the gold medal thanks to a better goal differential.

1964 – The Soviet Union scored a minute-and-a-half into the third period and nursed the lead the rest of the way, beating Canada 3-2. After winning its first five games, Canada dropped its second in a row and failed to medal for the first time in Olympic history.

1968 – Canada fell to Finland 5-2, the first win ever for the Finns over the Canadians at the Olympics or IIHF World Championship. Danny O’Shea and Billy MacMillan scored for Canada.

1992 – Goaltender Sean Burke stood tall as Canada outscored France 3-2 despite being outshot 29-19. Joe Juneau, Dave Archibald and Kent Manderville scored the Canadian goals.

2014 – Canada piled up 69 shots on goal and got goals from five different players in a 5-0 win over Switzerland to begin prelim play in Sochi. Rebecca Johnston paced the offence with a goal and two assists, and Charline Labonté made 14 saves for the shutout.

2022 – CANADA 6, ROC 1

At one of the strangest Olympic Winter Games in history, this might have been the strangest moment.

The preliminary-round meeting between Canada and ROC (the team representing Russia) was delayed more than an hour because the Russians’ COVID-19 test results had not yet been processed.

When the puck finally did drop, it was with both teams—and the officials—wearing KN95 masks, providing one of the most direct visuals of a Games played with very few fans and the global pandemic still dominating day-to-day life.

"We'd never actually worn (KN95). We always wore the blue ones before,” Natalie Spooner told The Canadian Press after the game. “This is actually much better, because it doesn't just suck into your mouth. I guess it's a little bit harder to see the puck if it gets in the way.

“I would say the biggest difference is talking. You have to talk so much louder for everybody to hear you on the ice.”

The delay and the masks certainly didn’t seem to affect the Canadians, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead just two-and-a-half minutes in thanks to goals from Sarah Nurse and Sarah Fillier.

Jamie Lee Rattray and Erin Ambrose stretched the lead to four in the second period before Anna Shokhina pulled one back for ROC late in the middle frame.

The Russians removed their masks before the third period, although the Canadians chose to leave theirs on.

“They just told us when we got out on the ice that their test results had come back negative and they were going to not play with them,” Spooner said.

"We just kind of said, ‘Well, we were in them for two periods, why not just stick it out?’ and we had them on already. We were already out on the ice, so we just kept them on and went with it.”

Masks or no masks, Canada dominated the final 20 minutes, outshooting the Russians 13-2 and adding goals by Rebecca Johnston and Marie-Philip Poulin to put a cap on one of the most unique games any of the participants will ever play in.

“We had a pretty good laugh about it,” Spooner said. “This is part of our story now, the COVID Olympics.”

1932 – Canada, represented by the Winnipeg Hockey Club, won for the third time in four days and recorded its first shutout of the Games in Lake Placid, with William Cockburn blanking Poland 9-0.

1936 – The Port Arthur Bearcats, representing Canada, shut out Latvia 11-0 to improve to 2-0 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Hugh Farquharson scored four times and added three assists, and Ralph St. Germain had three goals of his own for the Canadians.

1948 – Wally Halder and George Mara scored four goals apiece, and Halder added three assists for a seven-point performance, to lead Canada, represented by the RCAF Flyers, to a 12-0 victory over Austria in a penalty-free game by both teams.

1964 – Canada opened the scoring, but suffered its first loss of the Games in Innsbruck, Austria, falling 3-1 to Czechoslovakia to put its gold medal hopes in jeopardy.

1984 – Pat Flatley scored just 27 seconds in—the third-fastest goal to start a game in Canadian Olympic history—and Carey Wilson did the rest with a hat trick as Canada opened up preliminary-round play in Sarajevo with a 4-2 win over the United States.

1948 – CANADA 0, CZECHOSLOVAKIA 0

With the world still finding its way out of World War II, the Olympic Winter Games returned from a 12-year- hiatus in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Canada had not participated in the 1947 IIHF World Championship due to a disagreement with the Ligue internationale de hockey sur glace (LIHG), the precursor to the International Ice Hockey Federation, over the definition of “amateur” and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association had initially withdrawn from the 1948 Olympics.

In the end, the RCAF Flyers, a team of active and former members of the Royal Canadian Air Force based in Ottawa, were selected to represent Canada in a tournament played outdoors in the Swiss Alps.

“The further we went without a loss, the worse it got,” Canadian forward Wally Halder said upon his return from Europe. “The playing conditions didn’t help and some of the games were staged on ice that couldn’t possibly have been worse.”

By the time the game against Czechoslovakia came around, the Canadians and Czechs had identical 5-0 records, with the European side ahead in the standings based on its superior goal differential (+55 to +49).

Despite combining for 123 goals in their first 10 games—Canada had 54, Czechoslovakia had 69—the two teams played one of only four goalless games in men’s Olympic hockey history.

Murray Dowey earned the shutout for the Canadians, one of the record-setting five he recorded in St. Moritz. The Toronto native fashioned the longest and third-longest shutouts streaks in Olympic history—225:25 across four games from Jan. 30-Feb. 3 and 195:30 across four games from Feb. 5-8 (which included the Czech game).

1932 – Canada scored the game’s first four goals as part of a 4-1 win over Germany, improving to 2-0 in Lake Placid.

1936 – Bill Thomson scored four goals—three in the first period, including the fastest two ever by a Canadian to start a game (2:00)—to spark Canada to an 8-1 win over Poland in the tournament opener in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

1968 – Roger Bourbonnais scored twice and Ray Cadieux made history with a goal just nine seconds into the second period—the fastest to start a period in Canadian Olympic history—to help Canada open its schedule in Grenoble with a 6-1 win over West Germany.

MILAN, Italy – The Canadian Olympic Committee and Hockey Canada have made the following statement:

Seth Jarvis (Winnipeg, MB/Carolina, NHL) has been added to the men’s hockey roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games, pending International Olympic Committee (IOC) approval. He will replace Brayden Point (Calgary, AB/Tampa Bay, NHL), who is unable to participate due to injury.

Jarvis has recorded 256 points (121 goals, 135 assists) in 352 career regular-season NHL games, and has added 43 points (19 goals, 24 assists) in 55 playoff games. He also helped Canada win the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

MILAN, Italy – The Canadian Olympic Committee and Hockey Canada have made the following statement:

Sam Bennett (Holland Landing, ON/Florida, NHL) has been added to the men’s hockey roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games. He will replace Anthony Cirelli (Woodbridge, ON/Tampa Bay, NHL), who is unable to participate due to injury.

Bennett won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Florida Panthers (2024, 2025), winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2025. In 746 career regular season NHL games, he has recorded 378 points (181 goals, 197 assists), and has added 78 points (40 goals, 38 assists) in 107 playoff games. He also helped Canada win the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.
