GAME NOTES: CANADA VS. UNITED STATES (FEB. 10)
The rivalry is renewed as Canada’s Women’s Olympic Team meets the United States in the marquee preliminary-round matchup as Group A play continues at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Last Game
The Canadians earned their second win in as many games with a 5-1 victory over Czechia on Monday. Kristin O’Neill opened the scoring with her first Olympic goal and Julia Gosling scored two more power-play goals. Sarah Fillier and Laura Stacey rounded out the scoring and Brianne Jenner contributed two assists.
The United States improved to 3-0 with a 5-0 shutout of Switzerland on Monday. Joy Dunne and Caroline Harvey had a goal and two assists each, and Alex Carpenter added a goal and a helper. Gwyneth Philips made 20 saves before Ava McNaughton saw out the final 1:48 to complete the combined shutout.
Last Meeting
The North American neighbours last faced each other in the finale of the Rivalry Series in December, where the Canadians fell 4-1 to the Americans in Edmonton. Brianne Jenner provided all the offence, scoring her 50th goal with Canada’s National Women’s Team.
The last Olympic matchup? I think we all remember that one. Canada reclaimed the Olympic gold medal four years ago in Beijing, edging the Americans 3-2 in a thrilling final. Sarah Nurse and Marie-Philip Poulin scored in the first period, Poulin added the eventual game-winner (again) midway through the second and the Canadians withstood a late push from the U.S., with Ann-Renée Desbiens finishing a 38-save effort to secure a fifth Olympic gold for Canada.
What to Watch
Canada’s Olympic debutants continue to make an impact on the ice in Milan. Three of the seven first-timers have scored in the first two games: Gosling, O’Neill and Daryl Watts. Gosling leads the Canadian offence with three goals, picking up where she left off in the PWHL; the London, Ontario, product leads the Seattle Torrent with six goals and 12 points in 14 games. She also made the scoresheet in the Rivalry Series, pitching in with a goal and an assist in four games.
Hilary Knight is back for her fifth (and final) Olympics. The U.S. captain tied the American record for career Olympic goals (14) against Finland on Saturday and added a pair of assists in the win over the Swiss, giving her two goals and four points so far in Milan. But while veterans like Knight, Kendall Coyne Schofield and Alex Carpenter continue to lead the charge, the United States brought a lot of new faces to Italy. The U.S. has 12 players making their Olympic debuts—including all three goaltenders. Aerin Frankel has allowed one goal in 25 shots over her first two starts, while Gwyneth Philips was perfect in her debut Monday.
A Look Back
It’s the 11th Olympic meeting between the cross-border rivals, with the Canadians owning a 7-3 advantage.
Interestingly, this is the first time Canada and the U.S. will face each other in Italy. They were in different preliminary-round groups at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, and the Americans suffered a stunning shootout loss to Sweden in the semifinals.
All-time record: Canada leads 7-3 (1-1 in OT/SO) Canada goals: 27 United States goals: 24
