CENTRAL 1 QUEBEC 3 Round Robin By/Par: Graeme Kishiuchi The Telus Cup’s second game was a gritty, physical affair and was played at a fast pace as both teams trade power play chances. Don Mills Flyers took the first penalty of the game, but managed to generate a couple of scoring chances on the penalty kill, and carried that momentum for the first half of the period. Levis Commandeurs started to generate chances of their own as forward Jean-Phillippe Roy-Vallières walked out of the corner alone and was stopped by Sean DeZilva on the initial shot and the rebound. Don Mills continued to generate good scoring opportunities, but were unable to solve Levis goaltender Bobby Nadeau. Don Mills’ Brent Tamane and Kyle Wetering did an excellent job of killing of the Flyer penalties while creating chances of their own. The physical play continued at the start of the second period, with both teams taking a penalty in the first three minutes. After killing off their second penalty of the period, Don Mills controlled the game and generated numerous scoring chances and the Commandeurs’ Etienne Breton was forced to take a slashing penalty at 4:16. Don Mills continued their strong play into the power play and controlled the rest of the second period. The Levis Commandeurs started off the third period with some sustained pressure in the Don Mills end. After a Commandeur 3 on 1 yielded a shot off the crossbar, Don Mills transitioned into a breakaway for Kyle Ventura, who beat Nadeau with a backhand move to open the scoring at 17:43. The Quebec representatives responded by mounting an offensive surge, until Jonathan Labbe was robbed by DeZilva’s glove hand. Levis continued the pressure until 13:46, when François Gauthier finally solved DeZilva to even the score at 1-1. The teams traded chances until 8:29, when Gauthier backhanded home a rebound for his second of the night, putting the Commandeurs ahead 2-1. Levis extended their lead at 4:31 when Tony LeClerc tapped home a nice pass from behind the net from Olivier Painchaud, making it 3-1. The Flyers continued to generate chances despite being shorthanded for most of the third period, but were unable to put another past the Commandeurs Player of the Game, Bobby Nadeau (20 saves). Don Mills player of the game was Kyle Wetering.
