MATHESON’S PAIR LEAD LIONS TO VICTORY

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Michael Matheson scored twice, including the game winner with just under eight minutesto go as the Lions du Lac St-Louis scored a 5-4 win over the London Jr. Knights on Monday afternoon at MileOne Centre.

The Lac St-Louis captain’s wrist shot from the point eluded London goaltender Justin Tugwell to restorethe Lions’ lead after London had scored twice in the first 1:50 of the third period to pull into a 4-4tie.

Matheson opened the scoring just shy of the eight-minute mark of the first period, stepping over the blueline and rifling a shot over the glove of Craig Wood, who was lifted in favour of Tugwell after AlexandrosSoumakis made it a 4-2 game 7:52 into the second period.

The teams traded the game’s first four goals before Anthony Duclair and Soumakis beat Wood 1:18 apart togive the Lions their largest lead of the game at 4-2 and end Wood’s evening.

Matthew Schurr brought the Jr. Knights to within one at 4-3 with his second of the game just 37 secondsinto the third period, and Connor Hogg converted a shorthanded breakaway 73 seconds later to tie the game andset up a tense finish.

Despite a late power play, the Central Region champions couldn’t beat Lac St-Louis netminder FrançoisBrassard, who made 28 saves to record the win.

The Lions will look to run their record to 2-0 when they face the Winnipeg Thrashers in Tuesday’s matinee(noon NT), while the Jr. Knights face the host St. John’s Privateers in the late game (7 p.m. NT).
