Ontario Blue 4 - Quebec 2

WEBSTER LEADS ONTARIO BLUE TO 4-2 WIN OVER QUEBEC DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – She was named Ontario Blue player of the game for a reason, and part of that reason was because Brooke Webster (Aurora, Ont.) opened up the scoring early, and helped keep it going, notching two points in the first period en route to a win over Quebec on the opening day of the 2012 National Women’s Under-18 Championship at the EnCana Events Centre.
Her first contribution to the scoreboard came at 6:04 in the first period, with a little help from teammate Jessica Gillham (Uxbridge, Ont.). Despite a Quebec power-play goal from Ève-Audrey Picard (Longueuil, Que.) just under10 minutes later, Webster and team were determined to regain the lead, and they were able to do just that before the period came to a close. Webster earned her assist when she fed the puck to Victoria Andreakos (Aurora, Ont.), who also happens to be her teammate on Toronto in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), who put the puck in the net and another goal on the scoreboard. And it was 2-1 for Ontario Blue going into the first intermission. Quebec has always been a strong contender at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship, and has no doubt set its standards high again this year, but Ontario Blue was on a streak coming into the second, and Mackenzie MacNeil (Richmond Hill, Ont.), put the puck past the goal line to make it 3-1 at just 36 seconds into the period. Quebec picked up the pace under the pressure, but was unable to narrow the gap by the time the clock had ticked down on the middle frame. Quebec kept battling for the puck in the third, with Marie-Pascale Bernier (Quebec City, Que.) finally finding the back of the net for her team at 8:27 in the third to make it 3-2, but Ontario Blue wasn’t about to blow its lead, with Rebecca Leslie (Ottawa, Ont.) adding an insurance marker just over a minute later. And it was a 4-2 final in favour of Ontario Blue at the final buzzer. Quebec will have another chance for a ‘W’ at 10 a.m. MT Thursday when it takes on Alberta, while Ontario Blue will look to add another three points to the standings when it faces off against Manitoba at 1 p.m. MT.
