2001 IIHF World Junior Championship

Competition at the WJC is so tough that even with the Sedin twins, now with Vancouver, in the lineup for three straight tournaments the Swedes finished no higher than fourth. Sweden has changed coaches, dumping former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Lars Molin in favor of Bo Lennartsson. Anders Hedberg is general manager of the Swedish team and former Islanders defenseman Stefan Persson is manager. Niklas Kronvall and Lars Jonsson, top 2000 choices of the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, respectively, anchor the defense. Forwards Martin Samuelsson, and David Widing, were second selections of the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators, respectively, in 2000. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist is the property of the New York Rangers. Sweden produces excellent skaters, but its only WJC gold medal came 20 years ago in Germany. This is not a vintage Swedish team, but nobody can deny that it's due for some success.
