BOWDEN, BRIDGES SCORE TWO GOALS EACH, CANADA WINS SLEDGE GOLD NAGANO, Japan – Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) and Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) scored two goals apiece as Canada’s National Sledge Team won the gold medal at the 2012 Japan Four Nations Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Norway on Sunday. It’s the third time in four tries the Canadians have brought home gold from the Far East – they won the top prize in 2008 in Asahikawa and 2009 in Nagano, and settled for silver last year in Nagano in a tournament shortened by an earthquake. Bowden finished with two goals and two assists to pace the offence, while Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) scored the other Canadian goal. Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) added one assist to finish as Canada’s top scorer with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in five games. One day after allowing just four shots on goal in a semifinal win over Korea, the Canadians went one better against the Norwegians, holding them without a shot until the second period and giving up just three total. Benoit St-Amand (St-Hubert, Que.) earned his third win in the Canadian goal, making just two saves. The victory is the 15th in a row for Canada, dating back to a 1-0 loss to the Norwegians last March in Nagano. It’s the longest winning streak since Canada’s National Sledge Team came under the Hockey Canada umbrella in 2004, surpassing a 13-game run from Jan. 13-May 12, 2009. |
