To create that ideal skating stride we look at a few different things. First, we want to have our head up and our eyes looking around. Players want to be thinking about pulling a rope put their arms. It's okay to cross the midline of their body with the swing of their free hand, but the stick hand should only come to about the midline. Players want to stay low so they can extend their stride and recover underneath as quickly as possible.
