WINNIPEG, MB – Canada’s National Women’s Team has won the gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship following a 5-1 victory over the United States in Tuesday night’s gold medal game at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. With the win, Canada has now taken home nine of the ten World Women’s Championships, including all five played on Canadian soil (1990, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2007).
The Canadians finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, outscoring their opponents 32-5. The win over the Americans on Tuesday night avenged the loss to the USA in the gold medal game at the 2005 World Women’s Championship, the only gold medal Canada has failed to win.
Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, NWHL), Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, NWHL), Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL), Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC/Calgary, WWHL) and Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC/Harvard University, ECAC) scored the goals as Canada scored three times in the second period to break open a scoreless tie.
Wickenheiser’s goal gave her 14 points in the tournament (8 goals, 6 assists), setting a new Canadian World Women’s Championship record. The Canadian captain’s efforts earned her the Top Forward award from the IIHF Directorate, the Tournament MVP and a place on the Tournament All-Star Team. She was joined on the all-star team by goaltender Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, QC/Montreal, NWHL) and defenseman Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, MB/Calgary, WWHL).
