Gold Medal Game
August 15, 2004
Piestany, SVK

BRECLAV, CZECH REPUBLIC - Canada's National Under-18 Summer Team captured the gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Cup, after defeating the Czech Republic 4-1 in the final game of the tournament on Sunday. Canada finished the Championship with a perfect 5-0-0 record.

With the victory on Sunday, Canada has now won seven gold medals out of the last eight summer Under-18 events held in Europe. This annual Under-18 summer event has evolved over the years, going from four participating teams, to six teams, and to now an eight team tournament, featuring the top eight hockey countries in the world.

The Czech Republic captured the silver medal, while USA and Sweden were playing for the bronze medal (late game - no report on score).

Gilbert Brule of the WHL's Vancouver Giants scored the game winning goal for Canada. Bradford, Clutterbuck and Bertram added Canada's other goals to lead Canada to the gold medal win. Goaltender Carey Price of the WHL's Tri-City Americans got the win for Canada by stopping 16 of the Czech Republic's 17 shots. Canada killed off all 15 penalties, and only surrendered a short-handed goal to the hometown Czech’s.
