Red 2 - White 2

FERRARO GETS GAME-TYING GOAL AS RED SALVAGES 2-2 TIE WITH WHITE

Down by a goal and heavily outshot after two periods, it looked as if Team Red would come out on the wrong end for the second night in a row at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp in Calgary.

But a goal from Landon Ferraro (Vancouver, BC/Red Deer, WHL) with 7:27 to go pulled Team Red even and allowed it to salvage a 2-2 tie with Team White on Monday night in the second of three intersquad games at the four-day camp.

Team White scored a 2-0 win in the intersquad opener on Sunday night.

With Team White applying the majority of the pressure in the opening 20 minutes, it was Team Red who found the scoreboard first, taking advantage of a miscue by White goaltender Olivier Roy (Amqui, QC/Cape Breton, QMJHL).

Roy gathered a shoot-in behind his net and left it for his defenseman, only to see Red forward Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Brandon, WHL) swoop in and pick up the loose puck and feed Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/Kamloops, WHL), who beat a scrambling Roy for a 1-0 lead.

Team White pressured for the tying goal in the opening minutes of the second period, but were repeatedly turned away by Red goaltender Bryce O’Hagan (Burlington, ON/Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), who robbed James Henry (Winnipeg, MB/Vancouver, WHL) with a glove save and stopped Taylor Hall (Kingston, ON/Windsor, OHL) on a breakaway before giving way to Maxime Clermont (Montreal, QC/Gatineau, QMJHL) at the period’s halfway point.

The White persistence finally paid off with just over five minutes left in the middle frame, as Matthew Brown (Truro, NS/Moncton, QMJHL) took a pass from Evander Kane (Vancouver, BC/Vancouver, WHL) and picked the corner shortside over the blocker of Clermont to draw his team even.

Matthew Duchene (Haliburton, ON/Brampton, OHL) gave White its first lead three minutes later, gathering in a Ryan Ellis (Hamilton, ON/Windsor, OHL) pass and beating Clermont on a shorthanded breakaway.

White held a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal in the second period, and 22-12 overall through 40 minutes.

A wild third period saw a combined 21 shots – 11-10 in favour of White – but it was Red who potted the period’s only goal, as Ferraro found a loose puck in the crease and beat White netminder Nathan Lieuwen (Abbotsford, BC/Westside, BCHL) for the tying goal.

The two teams will meet for the final time in a Tuesday matinee (12:00 p.m. MT) before the coaching staff chooses Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team on Tuesday afternoon.
