FIVE UNANSWERED GOALS LEAD WHITE TO SECOND INTERSQUAD VICTORY Down three goals after less than 10 minutes, Team White didn’t start to panic at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp on Tuesday afternoon. Instead, they just started to score. Evander Kane (Vancouver, BC/Vancouver, WHL), Garrett Mitchell (Regina, SK/Regina, WHL), Matthew Duchene (Haliburton, ON/Brampton, OHL), Ryan Howse (Prince George, BC/Chilliwack, WHL) and Travis Randell Twillingate, NL/Halifax, QMJHL) scored in a span of 22 minutes in the first and second periods as White completed an unbeaten camp with a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Team Red. White scored a 2-0 win in the intersquad opener on Sunday, and the two teams played to a 2-2 tie on Monday night. Looking for their first win of the camp, Red relied on the line of Landon Ferraro (Vancouver, BC/Red Deer, WHL), Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/Kamloops, WHL) and Louis LeBlanc (Kirkland, QC/Lac St-Louis, LHMAAAQ) to give them a quick 2-0 lead. First it was Bubnick scoring from Ferraro and LeBlanc just 2:16 after the opening face-off, followed by Ferraro converting from Bubnick and LeBlanc just 2:38 later. A goal from Michael Latta (St. Clements, ON/Ottawa, OHL) got it to 3-0 before the 10-minute mark and Red looked to be on their way, but Kane scored on a Team White powerplay and Mitchell batted in a cross-ice feed from Kane three minutes later as White quickly closed the gap to a single goal heading into the first intermission. The White momentum continued into the second period, as they held Red without a shot on goal through the middle frame and had a 24-8 advantage after two periods. Duchene snuck a backhand over the shoulder of Red goaltender Maxime Clermont (Montreal, QC/Gatineau, QMJHL) to draw his team even eight minutes into the second, and Howse snapped a shot to the shortside of Clermont to complete the comeback and give White its first lead of the game. The Howse goal marked the end of the afternoon for Clermont, who was replaced by Bryce O’Hagan (Burlington, ON/Sault Ste. Marie, OHL), while Nathan Lieuwen (Abbotsford, BC/Westside, BCHL) entered the Red goal in place of starter Olivier Roy Amqui, QC/Cape Breton, QMJHL). Randell rounded out the scoring late in the second period, taking a pass from James Henry (Winnipeg, MB/Vancouver, WHL) after another turnover in the Team Red zone and ripping a shot past O’Hagan. With the intersquad games in the books, the 22-player roster for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team is set to be released on Tuesday afternoon, with the team departing for Europe on Wednesday. Canada opens the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament on August 12th against Switzerland. |
