Crimmitschau, Germany - Gustav Bjorklund's goal in the shootout earned Sweden a 4-3 win over Canada in an exhibition under-18 hockey game Monday. Sweden's Max Gortz scored at 16:41 of the third to force overtime. After a scoreless extra session, Swede Filip Forsberg and Canada's Daniel Catenacci scored in the first round of the shootout before Viktor Arvidsson put Sweden ahead 2-1. After Canada's Mark Scheifele was stopped Bjorklund then cemented the victory for Sweden, which held a 40-33 advantage in shots on goal. Catenacci scored twice in regulation for Canada while Slater Koekkoek had the other goal. Jeremy Boyce-Rotevall and Jonatan Nielson had the other goals for Sweden. The game was the second of three exhibition games Canada will play before opening the under-18 tournament Friday against the Czech Republic in Dresden. The Canadians edged the United States 2-1 on Saturday. Canada will play Germany on Tuesday in its final exhibition contest. Canadian head coach Mike Williamson said when his team played to its capability it was able to control the flow of the contest. But Canada did receive 10 of the 17 penalties called in the game, including the only two of the overtime session. "We really have to assert ourselves," Williamson said. "I thought in stretches during the game when we played the way we wanted to and the way we can we controlled the hockey game." "But we seemed to lose a lot of momentum with penalties and I think the players are still adjusting to the officiating so that has to be emphasized definitely. I thought our defence corps really played well and took a step forward and looked more comfortable than it did in the first game." Playing on consecutive days, while demanding from a physical point of view, was something Williamson relished for his players. "Especially after dropping this one, I think it will be good to get back on the horse," he said. Another positive element about the quick turnaround is the under-18 tournament format crams a lot of hockey into a short period of time. The event begins Thursday with the opening preliminary-round games and concludes just 10 days later with the gold medal contest. "Everything happens quickly," Williamson said. "It comes at you fast." And Williamson has some definite goals for his team to attain against the Germans. "I want see us play start to finish," he said. "I think we took our foot off the gas quite a bit (against Sweden), we played in stretches. "It doesn't matter who we're playing. We've talked about respecting all of our opponents but more importantly respecting ourselves and just going and playing. So I'd just like to see us play together and harder for the full 60 minutes." The Canadian roster features 14 players from the OHL, six from the WHL and two from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Canada is a two-time gold medallist at the world under-18 event, winning in 2003 and 2008. The Canadians were seventh in last year's tournament. |
