HANNOVER, Germany (CP) - Canada defeated Slovakia 6-4 Sunday to conclude the Deutschland Cup hockey tournament with a record of 1-2. Brad Purdie of Dollard, Que., scored twice for Canada, including a penalty shot with about 20 seconds left in regulation.

Steve Larouche of Noranda, Que., Andy Schneider of Edmonton, Peter Douris of Toronto and Jeff Tory of Burnaby, B.C., also scored in a see-saw battle in which the score was tied four times. "It was a pretty exciting game," said head coach Mike Pelino. "You don't often see 10 goals scored in international hockey."

Canada's penalty killing unit finally came together, killing all 12 of Slovakia's man advantages. Canada was outshot by Slovakia 36-33 with goaltender Jim Waite of Sherbrooke, Que., earning the victory.

"Team Canada always seems to get better as the tournament goes on," said Pelino.
Douris scored the winner with 6:27 remaining in regulation. The Canadian team was made up of players under contract to European clubs.

Switzerland finished with the best record of 3-0, including two shootout victories. Germany and Slovakia had a win and a loss and a shootout loss.
