HANNOVER, Germany -- The 2003 United States National Selects defeated Canada, 4-1, in the second game for both teams at the Deutschland Cup, being held at the Preussag Arena from Nov. 7-9. Team USA upped its record to 2-0-0 and could clinch the tournament championship with a victory tomorrow against Switzerland, while Canada stands at 0-2-0.
Brett Harkins opened the scoring for the United States at the 3:50 mark of the first period, taking a pass from David, splitting the defense and beating Canadiangoaltender Frederic Chabot in the top left corner. Peter Ratchuk also assistedon the play.
The United States dodged a bullet several minutes later as Canada, on the first of two back-to-back power plays, hit the post on a shot from defenseman JeffTory. With Canada’s Micki Dupont off for a five-minute high-sticking penaltyand a minor to Andy Schneider, the U.S. failed to score on a lengthy 5-on-3 powerplay, peppering Chabot from the point but failing to penetrate Canada’sdefensive perimeter.
The United States added to its lead early in the second period with a pair of goals 73 seconds apart. Ratchuk drilled a shot from the point on a pass from Bryan Lundbohm. Andy Roach poked home a shot from near the side of the net to make it 3-0. Harkins and Jeff Dessner assisted on the play. Canada’s Brad Purdie made it 3-1 when his slap shot from the top of the left face-off circle snuck through the legs of United States goaltender Chris Rogles.
A goal from Ted Drury at 9:01 of the third period put the game on ice for the United States. Drury picked up a pass from Derek Plante at center ice and skated into the Canadian zone and beat Chabot with a wrist shot from the high slot.
Rogles made the lead stand up, stopping 14 shots in the third period, for a game total of 30 saves. Chabot stopped 36 of 40 shots.
