HOST 5 VS QUEBEC 2 Semi-Final #2 By/Par: Graeme Kishiuchi The two Quebec rivals faced off in the second semi-final of the 2005 TELUS Cup on Saturday evening. The eventual winner would face the Saskatoon Contacts in Sunday’s Gold medal final. The Intrepide de Gatineau got into some penalty trouble early on but were able to hold off the dangerous attack of the Levis Commandeurs. The first period was a chippy and tight checking affair with neither team wanting to give up that all-important first goal. But it was the Host team Intrepide that scored first as Neil Chabot put a rebound past Maxim Gougeon at 13:43 of the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead. However, it would not last long, as Mickael replied for Levis just 23 seconds later on a 2-0 breakaway going high on Bobby Nadeau tying the game at one. Shots on goal after the first period were 13-11 in favour of Gatineau. Lévis scored early in the second to take their lead of the game on the power-play as a shot from Jean-Philippe Roy-Valliere bounced a puck over a sprawled Nadeau at 2:59 of the second. Mid-second, Lévis broke out on a two on one, but was called for a roughing penalty behind the play that could have proven very costly. Gatineau pressured the net during the power-play but Maxim Gougeon, the Top Goaltender of the tournament, kept the lead in tact for his team. However, the Intrépide pulled even when Guillaume Mailloux scored on the power-play at 14:31 of the second period. Going into the third period, the teams were deadlocked at two until Gatineau scored on the power-play at 16:06 of the third as Maxim Langelier-Parent banged home a rebound giving them a 3-2 lead. Mid-third, Gatineau put a stranglehold on Lévis as Guillaume Mailloux scored his second goal of the game at 8:38 of the third. Nicolas Morin, put the game away for Gatineau scoring a shorthanded empty-net goal at 18:20 of the third. Neil Chabot was named player of the game for Gatineau, while Jean-Philippe Roy-Valliere was named player
of the game for Levis.
