MCCAINS KEEP SEMI-FINAL HOPES ALIVE WITH WIN OVER BUFFALOES The Cole Harbour McCains have done their part. Now it’s Ottawa Valley’s turn to do theirs. Mitchell Maynard’s goal with six minutes to go capped a wild third period as the McCains kept their semi-final dreams alive with a 4-3 win over the Calgary Buffaloes on Friday. The win puts the Atlantic Region champions into fourth place for the moment, pending the outcome of the game between Ottawa Valley and Séminaire Saint-François in Friday night’s round-robin finale – a win by the Blizzard, or a win by the Titans by more than four goals, eliminates the McCains from playoff contention. For the first two periods it appeared Calgary would score their third consecutive win, outshooting Cole Harbour 26-9 in the opening 40 minutes and taking a 2-1 lead into the third period on goals from Riley Reinbolt – just nine seconds into the second period – and Joel Lowry. Christopher Riguse, with a beautiful snap shot to the top corner past Calgary netminder Sean Cahill, had the lone goal for the McCains. An undisciplined Buffaloes team allowed Cole Harbour to take control of the third period, as Sean Hoyt and Maynard scored 2:12 apart midway through the frame to give the McCains their first lead of the game. But the jubilation on the Cole Harbour bench would last just 1:24, as Tyler Horton would convert on a shorthanded breakaway, roofing the puck just underneath the crossbar to bring the Buffaloes even. Undaunted, the McCains came back on the same powerplay, with Maynard scoring 25 seconds after Horton’s goal to restore the lead at 4-3, capping a crazy four-goals-in-four-minutes stretch. Cole Harbour goaltender Philip Wright and the McCains’ defence held the Pacific Region representatives at bay for the last six minutes, clinching the first win of the 2008 TELUS Cup for the McCains. Maynard was named player of the game for Cole Harbour, while Hayden Rintoul took home the honour for Calgary. The Buffaloes will finish the round-robin in third place, and take on the loser of Friday afternoon’s Winnipeg-Sudbury game in Saturday’s second semi-final (7:30 p.m. ET). |
