GOALTENDERS STEAL SHOW AS ATLANTIC/B.C. END IN TIE
British Columbia goaltender Stephanie Ney made 44 saves, and Team Atlantic counterpart Ashley Boutilier
turned aside 34 shots as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in arguably the most exciting game of the 2007
National Women’s Under-18 Championship thus far on Thursday morning.
The two teams battled through almost 49 minutes of scoreless hockey before Kaitlin Imai pushed the puck
past Boutilier after a scramble in front of the Team Atlantic goal to give B.C. (0-1-1) the game’s first
lead, but Sarah Davis pulled the Easterners even with 5:04 to go, her shot from just inside the blueline
eluding Ney, sending the game to overtime.
Team Atlantic (1-0-1) had the best chances in the extra period, the majority of them coming on an early
powerplay, but Ney and her defense stood strong, including a game-saving stop from blueliner Kelsey
Halvorson, as the game ended deadlocked, the first tie at the U18 Women’s Nationals since Quebec and Alberta
finished 2-2 at the January 2005 event.
Davis picked up Player of the Game honours for Team Atlantic, who wrap up their round robin against Quebec
on Friday afternoon (4:00 p.m. ET), while Elana Lovell was given the nod for B.C., who face Ontario Blue in
their final preliminary round game on Friday (1:00 p.m. ET).
