A scan of the Czech Republic's scoring statistics through the years at the World Junior Hockey
Championship reads like a Who's Who of the NHL top scorers. Michal Pivonka, Robert Reichel, Jaromir Jagr,
Martin Rucinsky and Zigmund Palffy all have lit up the scoreboard for the Czech Republic at the Junior
Championship. And yet, for whatever reason, the Czechs, have never won the tournament. They have five
second-place finishes to their credit, but are still hoping for their first trip to the top of the
podium.
The 1999 edition of Team Czech Republic figures to be led by the likes of defenceman Martin Skoula, a
Colorado draft selection (17th overall in 1998), who amassed 44 points in 66 games with the OHL's Barrie
Colts during the 1997-98 season.
Another player to watch for is Patrik Stephane, a speedy, skillful centre who is playing for the Long Beach
Ice Dogs of the International Hockey League this season and among the IHL's scoring leaders. Stephane
competed in the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championship as a 17-year-old and impressed scouts. Other possible
returnees for the Czech Republic include goaltender Vlastimil Lakosil and right winger Radek Duda.
Top 3 Prospects: Michal Sivek, Vladimir Sicak, Mario Cartelli
