WESTLAKE SCORES 100TH, CANADA DROPS SLEDGE SERIES OPENER IN SHOOTOUT AMHERST, N.Y. – Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) scored the 100th goal of his Team Canada career, and added his team’s lone marker in the shootout, as Canada’s National Sledge Team opened its three-game series against the United States with a 3-2 loss Thursday night. Westlake tied the game with just under six minutes to go, joining Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.), who scored his 126th goal in the first period, as the only Canadian players to reach the century mark since sledge hockey came under the Hockey Canada umbrella in 2004. But the Canadian captain’s milestone goal would come in a losing cause, as the Americans converted two of their three shootout opportunities against goaltender Benoit St-Amand (St-Hubert, Que.), ending Canada’s 15-game winning streak. Bridges opened the scoring for the Canadians just shy of the four-minute mark of the first period, poking the rebound of an Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) shot past U.S. netminder Steve Cash as Kieran Block (Edmonton, Alta.) crashed the American net. The U.S. tied the game seven minutes into the second period on a shorthanded two-on-one, and took their first lead early in the third before Westlake snapped a shot past Cash to force an extra period. Game 2 of the three-game set goes Friday night, with the puck set to drop at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. All games in the series are being webcast at www.fasthockey.com for $7.99 per game. |
