Red 9 - White 11

WHITE USES SHOOTOUTS TO EARN WIN OVER RED CALGARY, AB – Carla MacLeod (Calgary, AB/Calgary, WWHL) and Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, AB/Edmonton, WWHL) scored goals in the pre-game shootout and Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB/Grant MacEwan College, ACAC) stopped all three shooters she faced to help lead White to an 11-9 win over Red on Thursday afternoon in a 4-on-4 game at the National Women’s Team January camp. In an interesting format, the results from the pre-game and post-game shootouts counted towards the final score – in addition to the goals scored, shootout saves made by a goaltender were included as goals for their team. What this means is that White had a 5-1 lead before the puck even dropped to start the game, thanks to MacLeod, Mikkelson and Szabados. Once the game got underway, it was Red who counted the only goal of the first period, off the stick of Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC/Harvard University, ECAC) just 2:35 after the opening faceoff, cutting the White lead to three goals. The teams went back and forth in the second period, with Annie Guay (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Montreal, CWHL) counting on the power play for White, only to see Gillian Ferrari (Thornhill, ON/Calgary, WWHL) reply for Red just 28 seconds later. After both teams had switched goaltenders, Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON/Calgary, WWHL) cut the White lead to two at 6-4, but it took White only 44 seconds to respond, as Mikkelson roofed a wrist shot over the shoulder of Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/McGill University, CIS). White started to pull away in the third period, with goals from Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton, CWHL) pushing the lead to 9-4. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Montreal, CWHL) rounded out the regulation time scoring, finishing off a give-and-go with fellow U18 team member Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga, CWHL) with a perfect wrist shot underneath the crossbar. Needing to score to have a chance to win Red got a goal from Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) in the post-game, but it was not enough, as Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL) turned aside Vaillancourt and Becky Kellar (Hagersville, ON/Burlington, CWHL) to clinch the victory. Camp wraps up on Friday with another Red-White 4-on-4 game, with the pre-game shootout set for 9:15 a.m. MST at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.
