Red 13 - White 10

RED EARNS SPLIT OF NWT INTERSQUAD GAMES CALGARY, AB – Gillian Ferrari (Thornhill, ON/Calgary, WWHL) scored once and added two assists as Red earned a split of the 4-on-4 intersquad games with a 13-10 win over White at the National Women’s Team January camp on Friday. In an interesting format, the results from the pre-game and post-game shootouts counted towards the final score – in addition to the goals scored, shootout saves made by a goaltender were included as goals for their team. Also, eight members of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Calgary Canucks took to the ice to help fill out the rosters, as did retired National Women’s Team star Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC/University of Calgary, ACAC), who made her first appearance in a Canadian jersey since the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Winnipeg, MB. Prior to the puck drop, Red’s Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL) was the only player to score in the shootout, meaning Red took a 4-2 lead into the game. Both teams scored twice in the opening frame, with Goyette and Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Montreal, CWHL) scoring for White while Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC/Harvard University, ECAC) and Becky Kellar (Hagersville, ON/Burlington, CWHL) countered for Red. After Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON/Brampton, CWHL) got the start in goal for Red, she was replaced by Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/McGill University, CIS) to begin the second period. But the opening frame would not be the only work for Hosier – she took the spot of White starter Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL) for the third period, giving each of the three goaltenders two periods of action. Trailing 6-4 to open the second period, White got goals from Canucks Mike Pao and Mitch Kulikoski to pull even at 6-6 before Ferrari restored the Red lead, following the puck to the net and finishing off a pass from Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, Collégial AA). Red widened its lead early in the third on goals from Botterill and David Pope, and Noémie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC/Montreal, CWHL), for White, and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Mississauga, CWHL), for Red, traded goals in the closing minutes to send Red to the post-game shootout with a 10-7 advantage. Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON/Calgary, WWHL) and Carla MacLeod (Calgary, AB/Calgary, WWHL) scored for Red and White, respectively, but that would be as close as White would get, as Labonté shut the door on Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, AB/Edmonton, WWHL) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, ON/Calgary, WWHL) to preserve the victory.
