TEAM RED 4 - UFA BISONS 1

RED TOPS BISONS FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE DAY, TAKES THIRD PLACE It certainly didn’t have the start it hoped for, but Canada Red finished strong. Hayley Wickenheiser scored once and added an assist and Delaney Collins contributed a pair of helpers as Canada Red grabbed third place at the National Women’s Team evaluation camp with a 4-1 win over the UFA Bisons Midget AAA boys’ team on Sunday in Calgary. It was the second win in as many days for Canada Red over the Bisons – Wickenheiser had a goal and two assists in Saturday’s 4-2 victory. After a scoreless opening 20 minutes the Bisons struck quickly in the second period, as Todd Calaghan poked a loose puck past Canada Red goaltender Charline Labonté just 2:37 into the frame. Kelly Bechard pulled Canada Red even three-and-a-half minutes later, snapping a shot from the point that sailed over the shoulder of UFA netminder Brayden Hopfe, and Wickenheiser scored her third goal in two games late in the period, stepping over the blueline and blasting a low slapshot past George Merik, who replaced Hopfe at the midway point of the period. Nursing a one-goal lead heading to the final period, Canada Red took the play to the Bisons, holding a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal. It held a 37-29 advantage overall. Canada Red got the insurance goal they were seeking off the stick of Dominique Thibault, who jammed in a loose puck at the side of the net to push the lead to 3-1 before Jennifer Botterill rounded out the scoring late in the game, redirecting a shot from Gina Kingsbury – who had tipped a point shot from Collins – past Merik. Kim St-Pierre, who took over for Labonté at the 10:30 mark of the second period, stopped all 14 shots she faced. |
