WICKENHEISER SCORES TWICE, BUT RED FALLS TO NORTHSTARS

CALGARY, Alta. – Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./University of Calgary, CWUAA) scored twice for the second time in as many nights, but a slow start doomed Red as it dropped a 7-5 decision to the Calgary Northstars Midget AAA boys team on Thursday night at Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival.

The Northstars scored on the game’s first shift and led 4-1 by the 13-minute mark of the first period.

Wickenheiser’s two goals paced the Red offence, while Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) added a goal and two assists. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Boston University, HE) and Catherine White (Brampton, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) had the other goals for Red, which three times pulled to within a goal in the third period, at 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5, before an empty-netter by Ryan Heddinger with 9.9 seconds to go iced the win for Calgary.

Heddinger, Cade Owad, Clint Filbrandt and Chad Labelle all had a goal and assist for the Northstars, while Keaton Burke chipped in with three helpers. Calgary scored three times on its first five shots against Red netminder Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta./NAIT, ACAC) and outshot Red 27-20 overall.

Red will take on the other Midget AAA team taking part in the camp, the Calgary Royals, on Saturday afternoon (12:30 p.m. MT), while the Northstars will face White on Saturday night (3:45 p.m. MT) after taking on the Royals in an all-Midget match-up on Friday night.
