CANADA INTO MLP SEMIS AFTER BLANKING GERMANS

RAVENSBURG, Germany – Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Canada’s National Women’s Team) and Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Mercyhurst College, CHA) each scored once and added two assists to lead the Canadian offence in a 7-0 win over Germany on Thursday, sending Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team to the semifinals of the 2010 MLP Cup.

Eleven different skaters earned points in the victory, which gave Canada top spot in Group B with a perfect 2-0 record and set up a Friday semifinal match-up with Sweden, the same team that ended Canada’s six-year run as tournament champions in 2009.

With more than 2,500 pro-German fans on hand, Canada jumped out to an early lead when Catherine White (Brampton, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) converted with her team on the power play. Stephanie Ramsay (Charlottetown, P.E.I./University of Alberta, CIS) made it 2-0 late in the period, again with the man advantage, sneaking a shot through the legs of German goaltender Jennifer Harss.

The Canadian power play continued to click in the middle frame, as Canada went 4-for-5 on the PP in the opening 40 minutes.

Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont./Mercyhurst College, CHA) made it 3-0 five minutes into the period, jumping off the bench to take a pass from Jesse Scanzano (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que./Mercyhurst College, CHA) and slide a backhand around Harss, and Annie Guay (Rouyn-Noranda, Que./Montreal, CWHL) scored from the point to send Canada to the intermission up 4-0.

The domination continued in period three, as the Canadians outshot Germany 19-0 in the period and tacked three goals onto their total.

Carolyne Prevost (Sarnia, Ont./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) one-timed a pass from Jenner past Harss, Bram beat the German netminder in close and Jenner finished off a three-way passing play that included Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, Que./University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Canada’s National Women’s Team), putting a cap on Canada’s second win over Germany in four days.

Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) earned the shutout, making eight saves. The clean sheet is the fourth of Hosier’s U22 career, more than any goaltender in the program’s history.
