CANADA KICKS OFF U22 SERIES WITH WIN OVER U.S. TORONTO, Ont. – Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont.) got the ball rolling, scoring 11:37 into the second period to finally break the ice for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team en route to a 4-1 win over the United States in the opener of a three-game series at the MasterCard Centre.
Fortino’s goal jump-started the Canadian offence, with Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S.) slipping a rebound past U.S. goaltender Alyssa Grogan five minutes later and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) driving the net and using some fancy stick work to make it 3-0 two minutes after that. The Americans finally struck back early in the third period thanks to the sister combination of Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux – Jocelyne set up her twin for a breakaway goal – but that would be the lone puck to beat Canadian netminder Geneviève Lacasse (Scarborough, Ont.), who made 29 saves in the win. Jessica Wong (Baddeck, N.S.) responded late in the final frame with Canada’s final tally, picking up a rebound and slipping it past Grogan to round out the scoring. Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont.) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) both earned assists on the Wong goal. Canada and the U.S. return to the MasterCard Centre ice on Thursday night in the second game of the series, with puck drop set for 7:15 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the series Saturday night, again a 7:15 p.m. start. |
