HURRICANES STAY PERFECT AT TELUS CUP, BLANK FLYERS
MACKENZIE DEMPSTER
SUDBURY, Ont. – Byron Fancy made 24 saves for the shutout, helping the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 2-0 win over the Moncton Flyers to stay perfect Tuesday at the 2018 TELUS Cup.
Dylan Nevil and Zack Stringer scored first-period goals for the Hurricanes, who followed a similar script to their tournament-opening win over Sudbury – early goals and shutdown defence.
Halfway through the first period, Carson Dyck pushed the puck around the net and found Nevil in front, and he went five-hole on Flyers netminder Brandon McKenna to make it 1-0.
The Hurricanes weren’t stopping there and netted their second goal just shy of the 18-minute mark. Kye Buchanan delivered the puck to Ridly Greig, who handed off to Stringer.
The 15-year-old forward deked his way around McKenna to tuck in the 2-0 goal on the glove side.
The Flyers fought back in the second period, outshooting Lethbridge 8-3, but Fancy was quick to keep his team ahead and keep his clean-sheet intact.
Lethbridge turned the tables in the third period, outshooting Moncton 19-6, but both Fancy and McKenna were perfect over the final 20 minutes. McKenna finished with 29 saves in a losing cause.
The Hurricanes will take on the Toronto Young Nationals on Wednesday afternoon (12 p.m. ET), right before the Flyers face the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves (7 p.m. ET).
