Canada’s National Sledge Team to open tournament against Russia on Jan. 17

CALGARY, Alta. - Canada’s National Sledge Team will face off against Korea, Russia and the United States at the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, Jan. 17-23 at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre in Bridgewater, N.S.

Ticket packages are now available for $50, providing admission to the six preliminary-round games, as well as both semifinals, and the bronze- and the gold-medal games. Please visit www.hockeycanada.ca/tickets or CLICK HERE for ticket information, including how to purchase.

Canada opens the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge against Russia at 5 p.m. AT on Sunday, Jan. 17. The Canadians also play Korea at 7 p.m. AT on Monday, Jan. 18, and the United States at 7 p.m. AT on Wednesday, Jan. 20 in preliminary-round action.

In the tournament’s eight-year history, Canada has won five gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze. Canada beat Korea 4-1 in the bronze-medal game at the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Leduc, Alta.

“Fans here are excited to welcome these teams and see a world-class event in Nova Scotia with amazing athletes,” said Kevin Benjamin, general manager of the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre and co-chair of the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge. “We know our community will come out to support this event and demonstrate our Maritime hospitality to Hockey Canada and the four teams and their fans who will be competing at this year’s World Sledge Hockey Challenge.”

Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. AT. Both the bronze- and gold-medal games will be played on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. AT.

All preliminary-round games, as well as the semifinals and bronze-medal game, will be webcast through FASTHockey on the game summary pages at www.hockeycanada.ca/wshc.  

The gold-medal game of the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge will be aired on TSN and RDS, official broadcasters of Hockey Canada. Please check your local listings for broadcast times in your area.
