CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada has hired Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) as its new senior manager of scouting and player development within Canada’s National Women’s Program.

In her role, Piper will oversee the scouting staff and lead player evaluation and selection for all levels of the Team Canada program. She will also work with club teams, assisting coaches with the development of athletes to help them progress through the national team program.

Piper joins Hockey Canada from the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA), where she was the high-performance technical manager for seven years (2014-21). She also served as an assistant coach with the Markham Thunder of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) in 2018-19, helping the team to the Clarkson Cup semifinals.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cherie to our staff and have her fill a role that is crucial to the success of our athletes and teams at all levels,” said Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.), director of hockey operations. “Cherie’s knowledge and expertise in working with high-performance athletes with the OWHA has been vital to the development of Ontario-based athletes, and we know she will bring her extensive skillset to the national level to help our athletes and teams be successful on the international stage.”

As a player, Piper won three Olympic gold medals (2002, 2006, 2010), and added one gold (2004) and three silver medals (2005, 2008, 2011) at the IIHF Women’s World Championship. She appeared in 111 games for Canada’s National Women’s Team from 2001 to 2011, recording 118 points (40 goals and 78 assists) and leaving her 10th all-time in National Women’s Team scoring.
