Press release from the International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF

Canada’s men’s national team from the 1964 Olympic Winter Games and IIHF World Championship in Innsbruck will be awarded a set of bronze medals from the event.

In 1964, the World Championship was held in conjunction with the Olympic Winter Games. The Soviet Union won the gold medal for both the World Championship and Olympics, while Sweden earned the silver for both.

The disparity came for the bronze medallists, which in the Olympic games was Czechoslovakia, while Canada won the bronze medal for the World Championship event. At the time, officials only awarded the Olympic medals, and now 45 years later the Canadians will receive the bronze as the oversight is now being corrected.

“I am glad that the Canadian team will receive their overdue bronze medals,” said IIHF president René Fasel. “While we regret the oversight, it is heartening to see that all these years later the team will receive the credit they deserve for their bronze medal performance.”

“Hockey Canada appreciates the work that the IIHF and René Fasel have put into the announcement of the 1964 Team Canada Bronze medal”, says Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson

“As president of Hockey Canada, I look forward to, along with René Fasel, presenting these medals to all the players and staff in the presence of their families“.

The medals are currently being produced, and are expected to be presented to the players in approximately a month.

The 1964 Team Canada: Ken Broderick, Seth Martin; Henry Akervall, Barry McKenzie, Terry O’Malley, Rod Seiling, Gary Begg, Gary Dineen, George Swarbrick, Roger Bourbonnais, Terry Clancy, Brian Conacher, Ray Cadieux, Paul Conlin, Bob Forhan, Marshall Johnston.

Coach: Father Bauer
