Team Canada Names Stacy Roest Captain for Spengler Cup

CALGARY, AB – Hockey Canada announced on Tuesday that former NHLer Stacy Roest (Lethbridge, AB/Rapperswill, SUI) will be the team’s captain at the 2006 Spengler Cup, which kicks off on Boxing Day in Switzerland.

Alternate captains will be defencemen Jason Strudwick (Edmonton, AB/ Lugano, SUI) and Jay Harrison (Oshawa, ON/ Toronto, AHL), as well as forwards Dominic Pittis (Calgary, AB/ Kloten, SUI) and Tyler Wright (Canora, SK, Basel, SUI).

The Spengler Cup dates back to 1923 and is the oldest continual club tournament in the world. Canada has won 10 titles since it started competing in the event in 1984. Canada last won the Spengler Cup in 2003.

All of Canada’s games will be shown on Sportsnet, beginning with the Boxing Day game against Mora IK (Sweden). Click here for Sportsnet’s full broadcast schedule of the Spengler Cup.

SPENGLER CUP SCHEDULE (all times Eastern)

December 26th – CAN vs. Mora IK (SWE), 2:15 p.m.

December 27th – CAN vs. HC Davos (SUI), 2:15 p.m.

December 29th – CAN vs. Khimik (RUS), 9 a.m.

December 30th – CAN vs. EHC Eisbaren Berlin (GER), 9 a.m.

December 31st – Championship final, 6 a.m.
