BIG FIRST PERIOD LEADS COLTS TO VICTORY OVER CRUSHERS It looks as if the Cornwall Colts are semi-final bound at the 2008 RBC Cup. Joey Derochie, David Chubb and Darcy Findlay scored in the first period as the Colts scored a 6-1 win over the Weeks Crushers on Tuesday night, all but assuring the tournament hosts a spot in Saturday’s semi-finals. A win by Humboldt over Oakville on Wednesday afternoon (2:00 p.m. ET), or a Colts win over Camrose on Wednesday night (7:00 p.m. ET), locks up a final four berth for Cornwall. Needing a quick start against a team coming off their first win of the National Junior A Championship one night earlier, Derochie took a short pass from Damian Cross on a mini two-on-one, walked in and found space over the blocker of Weeks goaltender Alexandre Quessy just 1:47 after the opening face-off. The Colts held a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal over the Crushers in the opening 20 minutes and ran their lead to 2-0 at the 15:27 mark when Chubb, after fanning on his first attempt from the slot, batted the puck past Quessy. Findlay rounded out the Colts’ best period of the tournament by collecting in a rebound and sliding the puck past Quessy on the backhand just 1:16 after Chubb’s goal. The Crushers had the lone goal of the second period – Scott MacManaman snapped a shot over the glove of Cornwall netminder Justin Roethlingshoefer – despite the fact that the Colts had a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal in the middle frame. The third period did nothing but cement the Colts’ dominance of the East Region champions, as Cornwall scored three times – Alain Joanette and Matt Pinder scored powerplay goals and Chubb had his second of the game – to complete the rout. Roethlingshoefer – who made 25 saves – and Quessy – who was pulled in favour of Max Pelzner just moments before Pinder’s goal rounded out the scoring – were named players of the game. The Crushers have Wednesday off before returning to the ice at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Thursday afternoon, when they face the Humboldt Broncos at 2:00 p.m. ET. |
