They’re back! For the second year in a row, and the fifth time in eight seasons, the Camrose Kodiaks are going to play for Canada’s National Junior A Championship. Camrose was a runaway winner in the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2007-08, finishing with 103 points – just one off the franchise record set in 2004-05 – seven points ahead of the second-place Okotoks Oilers. The offence had an off year by Kodiaks’ standards, scoring 240 goals, which was still good for third in the AJHL. Joe Colborne was the runner-up in the AJHL scoring race, with 90 points in 55 games, and co-led the league with 57 assists. The defence was the big story, setting a franchise record by allowing just 139 goals, tying the fourth-best mark in AJHL history. Not surprisingly, Camrose goaltenders were among the league leaders, with Mathieu Larochelle finishing first with a 2.11 goals against average and Allen York not far behind in third, at 2.24. After earning a first-round bye in the AJHL playoffs, the Kodiaks dispatched the Olds Grizzlys in six games and the Drumheller Dragons in five, setting up an Enerflex Cup final with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the North Division regular season champions. After taking a seemingly-commanding 3-1 series lead, the Kodiaks dropped games five and six to set up a winner-take-all Game 7 on home ice. Camrose’s best players were their best players in the do-or-die game, as Colborne scored the game-winning goal and York recorded 32 saves for the shutout as the Kodiaks claimed their fifth AJHL championship in eight years with a 2-0 win. Only one obstacle remained between the Kodiaks and another RBC Cup berth, and it was the BCHL champions from Penticton, who had swept Nanaimo in the BCHL final and were rested and ready for the Doyle Cup. Despite only three days between Game 7 and Game 1, the Kodiaks won the first two games on home ice and, after the series moved to B.C., finished off the Vees in five games to book their return trip to the RBC Cup.
