2010 TELUS Cup

Notre Dame Hounds 2 - Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard 2

PENALTIES GALORE AS HOUNDS, GAULOIS PLAY TO 2-2 DRAW

LÉVIS, QUE. – A penalty parade was on display at the Lévis Arena on Tuesday afternoon as the Notre Dame Hounds and Gaulois du Collège Antoine-Girouard battled to a 2-2 tie at the 2010 TELUS Cup.

A total of 30 minor penalties were handed out to the two teams. Notre Dame, which defeated the Red Deer Optimist Rebels 5-3 on Monday, moved to 1-0-1 at this year’s National Midget Championship. Antoine-Gaulois, meanwhile, earned its second tie in as many days, following a 3-3 tie with the St. John’s Fog Devils.

The game started with a quick goal by the Gaulois, as Dominic Beauchemin (Varennes, Que.) scored at even-strength at 1:04 of the first. Guillaume Mollicone (Boucherville, Que.) made a hard, crisp pass to Beauchemin, who split the Notre Dame defence and made a great move to beat Hounds goaltender Riley Parker (Abbotsford, B.C.).

The score remained 1-0 until late in the first period. Gaulois captain Alexandre Lemieux (Beloeil, Que.) scored on a power play with 5.9 seconds left on the clock to give his team a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Slater Koekkoek (Mountain, Ont.) got the Hounds on the board at the 18:12 mark of the second period with his team on a power play. Special teams were the story of this game, as one team or the other seemed to have a man advantage throughout.

The Gaulois took a 2-1 lead into the third but it wouldn’t be long before the Hounds struck again to tie the game. Yannick Laflamme, a Thetford Mines, Que., native who is well known in these parts as a former member of the Lévis Commandeurs system, scored at the 35-second mark of the third to make it 2-2.

The Gaulois outshout the Hounds 40-37. Both Parker and Antoine-Girouard goaltender Julien Giroux (St-Eustache, Que.) each made several spectacular saves to keep their respective teams in the game.
