ALBERTA TOPS MANITOBA 4-1 IN TOURNAMENT OPENER DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – It was a game of firsts Wednesday morning at the EnCana Events Centre.
Alberta had the jump right from the start, with Manitoba getting sent to the box just 32 seconds into the game and then getting called on another penalty less than eight minutes into the game. Alberta took full advantage of the opposition’s shaky start, putting plenty of pucks on net, skating with some serious speed and keeping Manitoba’s players on their toes. The momentum continued through the middle frame for Alberta, with Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.) making it 2-0 at 8:05 in the second and Samantha Sutherland following suit at 14:35 to put the scoreboard at 3-0 going into intermission. But Manitoba wouldn’t allow Alberta to skate away with a shutout. After regrouping during the break, Manitoba came out of the doors flying in the third, with 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World champion Ashleigh Brykaliuk (Brandon, Man.) putting her team up on the scoreboard just 51 seconds into the third. There simply wasn’t enough time for a comeback, however, and Alberta’s Madison Haller (Calgary, Alta.) would seal the deal with a power-play goal at 2:41 in the last frame for a final score of 4-1, giving her team the first three points in the standings. Alberta’s next task will be taking on Quebec, with the puck dropping Thursday morning at 10 a.m. MT, while Manitoba will look for its first tournament win Thursday at 1 p.m. MT against Ontario Blue.
