ONTARIO RED SKATES AWAY FROM 2012 NATIONALS WITH BRONZE MEDAL DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – There’s nothing wrong with a little bronze, especially when you skate away wearing that medal around your neck with passion, a positive attitude and plenty of pride.
And that’s exactly what Ontario Red did Saturday, despite disappointment in not advancing to the gold medal game for its first time in history, taking it in all in stride as its players celebrated an exciting and competitive 3-2 overtime win with bronzed grace under gold medal pressure. British Columbia also accepted fourth place with a sense of accomplished grace, giving the team to beat Ontario Red some serious competition on the ice to send the game into overtime. In fact, British Columbia actually cracked the scoreboard first, with blueliner Stephanie Payne (Surrey, B.C.) getting the puck to Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.), who sent the home province crowd into hysterics when she put it past the Ontario Red goal line midway through the opening frame. The score remained 1-0 for B.C. heading into the second, and Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) quickly made it 2-0, much to the delight of the cheering, cow bell ringing, Hockey Canada horn blowing fans in the stands, scoring an unassisted marker at just 1:35 in the period. Ontario Red remained undeterred, however, with 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship gold medallist Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont.) accepting the puck from defenceman Emma Greco (Burlington, Ont.) to make it 2-1 at 7:14 in the middle frame. Both teams continued to battle hard through the second, and into the third, with Ontario Red’s Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) scoring her first huge goal of the game at 15:41 in the third to send the game into sudden death overtime. It was Nurse to score again in the extra period, with an unassisted marker at 3:55 to sound the whistle, light up the lamp and send the Ontario Red bench flying onto the ice to congratulate their goalie and each other for a job well done at this year’s National Women’s Under-18 Championship. Congratulations to both British Columbia and Ontario Red for playing with passion and pride, grace and grit, and everything it takes to represent their provinces and the female game with excellence. |
