ONTARIO BLUE SECURES SECOND WIN TO ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The may be thought of as the Ontario underdogs, but they’re well on their way to proving their sceptics wrong here at the 2012 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Ontario Blue skated away with a 2-1 in over Alberta on Friday, earning them a spot in semifinals Saturday and a chance to play for a medal Sunday.

But they had to battle hard for the honours, facing an always strong Alberta squad in what was a highly emotional game for both teams. It was action-packed from the first puck drop, with Rebecca Leslie (Ottawa, Ont.) jumping on a power-play chance and putting Ontario Blue up on the scoreboard first, with help from Corie Jacobson (Warren, Ont.) at 7:39 in the first. Alberta skated hard but just couldn’t get a goal on the score sheet before the period was up.

The back-and-forth, fast-paced game continued throughout the middle frame, but Ontario Blue managed more shots on net than Alberta, and at 17:54 it paid off with another goal from Jordan McDonnell (East York, Ont.), on a pass from Taylor Accursi (Ancaster, Ont.) to make it 2-0 by the end of the period.

The two-goal deficit must have lit a fire under Alberta’s skates, however, as the western Canadian team came out flying in the third with team captain Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.) putting one past the Ontario Blue line just 26 seconds into the period, on an assist from Karly Heffernan (St. Albert, Alta).

But despite Alberta coming out with attitude in the third and a last ditch attempt to even up the score, there just wasn’t enough time left in the game for Alberta to stage a comeback, and Ontario Blue ultimately skated away with its second victory here in Dawson Creek, and a total of six points after preliminary round action.
