2001 IIHF World Junior Championship

When Kazakhstan competed in the World Junior Championship A pool tournament for the first time in 1998, the forecast was for an automatic last-place finish and relegation to the B pool. But scouts were shocked when Kazakhstan embarrassed an underachieving Canadian team 6-3 in a playoff for seventh place. Four years later, Kazakhstan still is in the top group, Nikolai Antropov - its best player in 1998 - is playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs and scouts are paying a lot more attention to the Kazakh team. Vadim Sozinov, Toronto Maple Leafs' sixth choice in the 2000 draft, leads this year's entry. Sozinov plays for the OHL Ottawa '67s. Roman Kozlov, who led his country in scoring at the 1999 World Under-18 B Pool tournament, also is an offensive threat. In Soviet times, youth hockey teams from the republic of Kazakhstan won their share of games in all-union competitions against other republics like Russia.. Kazakhstan's new coach 39-year-old Sergei Starygin played in the old Soviet Elite League in the1980s when it was full of stars.
