Canada's Men's Olympic hockey team notched their first victory at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games on Sunday, defeating Germany 3-2 in front of 6,425 fans at the Peaks Ice Arena in Provo, Utah.

After a scoreless first period, Canada opened the scoring at the 8:59 mark, as Joe Sakic put the puck past German goaltender Marc Seliger. Just over five minutes later, Paul Kariya scored his first goal of the tournament, lifting a loose puck into the top corner. Adam Foote would put Canada up by three later in the period with a shot from the point, which beat a screened Seliger. Canada went to the dressing room with a 3-0 lead.

Germany came out flying in the third, scoring two goals, but it wasn't enough as Canada held on for the win.

New Jersey Devils' goaltender Martin Brodeur recorded the win in his Olympic debut, stopping 18 of 20 shots he faced.

Canada will now face the 1998 Olympic champions, the Czech Republic, on Monday at 4:00pm (MT) at the E Center in Salt Lake City. The defending champions are led by forward Jaromir Jagr of the Washington Capitals and goaltender Dominik Hasek of the Detroit Red Wings.
