2002 Olympic Winter Games (Men)

Canada 3 - Czech Republic 3

Canada's Men's Olympic hockey team finished the preliminary round of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games with a 1-1-1 record, after tying the defending Olympic champions, the Czech Republic, 3-3 on Monday night. Canada will now face Finland in one of four quarter-final matchups on Wednesday. Game time is 8:15pm (MT).

Canadian captain Mario Lemieux, after sitting out Sunday's game vs. Germany, scored two goals for Canada, including a breakaway marker midway through the first period to give Canada a 1-0 lead. The Czech Republic would respond with a goal from Martin Havlat late in the period to send the teams to the dressing room tied at one.

Martin Havlat would net his second of the night early into the second period, to give the Czechs their first lead of the game. Lemieux would then score his second of the night with just over a minute to play in the period, once again sending the teams to the dressing room tied.

The Czech Republic would regain the lead in the third, as Jiri Dopita knocked in a loose puck, after it took a crazy bounce off Canadian defenceman Al MacInnis' skate. Canada would not give in as Joe Nieuwendyk scored late in the third period, off a great feed from Theoren Fleury to give Canada a 3-3 tie with the defending Olympic champions.

Martin Brodeur made his second consecutive start in goal for Canada, stopping 20 of 23 shots he faced.
The last time Canada faced Finland in Olympic play, Finland defeated Canada 3-2 to capture the bronze medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.
