HART AND INGRAM BLANK U SPORTS AT JUNIOR SELECTION CAMP
DAVID BRIEN
BOISBRIAND, Que. – Goals from Victor Mete (Woodbridge, Ont./London, OHL), Nicolas Roy (Amos, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL) and Brett Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) led Canada’s National Junior Team hopefuls to a 3-0 win over the U Sports All-Stars at selection camp on Tuesday afternoon.
Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) got the start in goal for Canada and stopped all four shots he faced in 30 minutes of work before Connor Ingram (Imperial, Sask./Kamloops, WHL) was perfect on 11 chances the rest of the way,
The U Sports All-Stars were backstopped by Team Canada candidate Michael McNiven (Georgetown, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL), who answered the call with a 24-save performance.
Thanks in large part to three power-play chances, the Canadians held a 10-2 advantage in shots in the opening frame, with Mete netting the only goal of the period at 7:35, sending a low shot just out of McNiven’s reach.
The next goal wouldn’t come until the 13:50 mark of the second period; Mathieu Joseph (Chambly, Que./Saint John, QMJHL) skated around a U Sports defender and let go a shot that bounced off the end-boards onto the stick of Roy for an easy tap-in and a 2-0 lead.
Canada scored again late in the middle stanza on its sixth power play when a point shot from Kale Clague (Lloydminster, Alta./Brandon, WHL) was redirected in close by Howden.
A scoreless third period left the Canadians with a 27-15 advantage in shots on goal.
Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp concludes Wednesday with the campers facing off against the Czech Republic at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau.
