WINNIPEG, MB – Hockey Canada announced on Thursday that the City of Winnipeg has won the bid and will host the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in early April 2007. A full game schedule and ticket information will be announced at a later date, after IIHF approval.

“The group from Winnipeg did a great job throughout the bid process and will be great hosts for the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship,” said Hockey Canada President and chairman of the Site Selection Committee Bob Nicholson. “We are looking forward with great anticipation to the 2007 Worlds in Manitoba, and to further the promotion and growth of women’s hockey all across Canada.”

Winnipeg, and the Province of Manitoba, has had enormous success at hosting major sporting events, including the 1999 Pan-Am Games, the 1999 IIHF World Junior Championship, National Junior Team Selection Camp and pre-competition games in December 2004 and the recent January 1st Canada vs. USA women’s hockey game which was attended by 12,628 fans.

“We’re delighted for the opportunity to showcase our community during the 2007 World Women’s Championship,” said Brian Sarna, Hockey Manitoba’s President. “We are confident that this will be an exciting event for Winnipeg and Manitoba and will provide a lasting legacy for hockey in Manitoba.”

Five groups had originally submitted letters of intent to bid on the 2007 World Women’s event to Hockey Canada on November 1st, 2005. Two of those five groups (Winnipeg and Toronto) submitted official bids by the November 30th deadline and made in-person presentations to the Site Selection Committee on December 8th, 2005.

The groups that did not submit official bids after originally submitting letters of intent were: City of Sherbrooke (QC), Destination St. John’s, (Nfld) and Events Halifax.

The Site Selection Committee comprised of Bob Nicholson (President, Hockey Canada), René Marcil (Chair of Board, Hockey Canada), Gay Hahn (Director, Hockey Canada Female Council) and resource person Scott Smith (Hockey Canada’s Senior Vice-president, Operations) made a recommendation to the Hockey Canada Board of Directors, who approved Winnipeg as host for the World Women’s Hockey Championship.

There will not be an IIHF World Women’s Championship in 2006, as the IIHF does not hold a World Women’s Championship in Olympic years. Canada will defend its Olympic gold medal February 10-24, 2006 in Turin, Italy.

Canada has won eight of nine IIHF World Women’s Championships, since its inception in 1990. Canada lost in the 2005 IIHF World Women’s Championship final to the USA, in a 1-0 game that was decided in a shootout. To date, Canada has hosted the IIHF World Women’s Championship four times, in 2004 (Halifax/Dartmouth, NS), in 2000 (Mississauga, ON), in 1997 (Kitchener, ON) and in 1990 (Ottawa, ON).
