2007 IIHF Ice Hockey Junior World Championship

Team Red 3 – Team White 6

Sam Gagner (Oakville, ON/London, OHL) scored twice and added an assist and Steve Downie (Queensville, ON/Peterborough, OHL) picked up three assists as Team White managed a split of the World Junior selection camp intersquad games with a 6-3 win over Team Red on Wednesday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

After a quick start to the game, Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg, MB/North Dakota, WCHA) opened the scoring 14 minutes into the opening frame for Team White, converting a pass from Chris Stewart (Scarborough, ON/Kingston, OHL) to spot Team White a 1-0 lead.

White added to its lead just 94 seconds later, as Brad Marchand (Hammonds Plains, NS/Val d’Or, QMJHL) finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play from linemates Downie and Andrew Cogliano (Woodbridge, ON/Michigan, CCHA) for a 2-0 lead.

The lead would hold up through the opening 20 minutes, despite Team Red holding the shots-on-goal advantage in the first period. Team White starting goaltender Trevor Cann (Oakville, ON/Peterborough, OHL) turned aside all 13 shots he faced, while Red counterpart Jonathan Bernier (Laval, QC/Lewiston, QMJHL) stopped nine of 11.

Both teams came out firing early in the second, with three goals in the opening four minutes of the period.

A point shot from Brendan Mikkelson (St. Albert, AB/Vancouver, WHL) eluded Cann on a Team Red powerplay in the second minute of the period, and James Neal (Whitby, ON/Plymouth, OHL) knotted the game at 2-2 with an unassisted effort just two minutes later.

It took just 43 seconds Team White to regain the lead, as Gagner picked up his first of the game, firing high on Bernier for a 3-2 lead.

Both teams made a goaltending change midway through the period, with Carey Price (Anahim Lake, BC/Tri-City, WHL) spelling Bernier in the Red goal, and Leland Irving (Edmonton, AB/Everett, WHL) replacing Cann for Team White.

After going scoreless through the final half of the second period, Team White extended their lead early in the third period, as Cogliano tipped in a Drew Doughty (London, ON/Guelph, OHL) point shot.

Gagner pushed the lead to three just past the midway point of the period, finishing off a beautiful shorthanded 2-on-1 with Downie for a 5-2 lead.

Team Red’s Cody Bass (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga, OHL) and Team White’s Stewart traded goals down the stretch to round out the scoring.

Price stopped 11 of the 14 shots he faced in his 30 minutes of work, while Irving turned aside 15 of 16. Team Red held a 35-27 advantage in shots for the game.

The games wrap up Thursday night as selection camp players face-off with a team of CIS All-Stars, made up of University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge players. Puck drop is at 5:00.

Tickets for the game are $10, and include admission to the Calgary Royals vs. Okotoks Oilers AJHL game at 8:30. Both games are at Father David Bauer Arena.
