Canada 1 - Switzerland 2 OT

Switzerland scores on penalty shot in OT to edge Canada 2-1 at Deutschland Cup MUNICH, Germany _ Canadian head coach Mark Messier has seen almost everything over his long hockey career. But a penalty shot with one second left in overtime? That was a first. Messier's team of Europe-based Canadian men's hockey players dropped a 2-1 decision to Switzerland at the Deutschland Cup on Saturday. After four minutes 59 seconds of overtime, Damien Brunner beat goaltender Fred Brathwaite to hand Canada its second straight loss at the tournament. “I don't think I've ever lost a game like this,” Messier said. “It's definitely a first in any of my experiences.” The penalty shot was called when a Canadian player accidentally dislodged the net during a goalmouth scramble. It was Brunner's second goal of the game. Adam Mitchell scored for Canada. Messier said he was very impressed with his team's effort. “They played a tremendous game today,” Messier said. “They completely dominated the game in every area. They did everything but come up with the win. So it's obviously very disappointing.” Leonardo Genoni made 36 saves for Switzerland, five more than Brathwaite. Canada opened the three-game round robin with a 4-3 loss to host Germany on Friday. Canada will close out the tournament with a game against Slovakia on Sunday. Slovakia edged Germany 3-2 in the other game Saturday. Messier made his head coaching debut last Tuesday, guiding a different squad of Europe-based Canadians to a 6-2 win over Switzerland in the Swiss Challenge. He will also coach Canada at the Spengler Cup in December. The former NHL star was Canada's general manager at the IIHF world hockey championship in May when the national team finished seventh. Canada won gold when it last participated in the four-team Deutschland Cup in 2008. There is no playoff format at the tournament. The team with the highest point total at the end of the round robin will win the title. |
