Red 4 - White 2

QUICK START SPARKS RED TO SECOND U18 WIN CALGARY, Alta. – Call it a tale of two games. Team White dominated two periods of Monday night’s intersquad game at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp, outshooting Team Red 27-10 and outscoring it 2-1. Unfortunately for White, its offensive push came after Red had scored three times in the opening 20 minutes, and rode that hot start to a 4-2 win, its second in as many nights in intersquad action. Brooks Macek (Winnipeg, Man./Tri-City, WHL) and Ryan O’Connor (Hamilton, Ont./Barrie, OHL) scored goals 18 seconds apart midway through the first period after Christian Thomas (Toronto, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) had opened the scoring 4:27 in as Red looked to be on its way to a comfortable win, up three after one frame. But Gregg Sutch (Newmarket, Ont./Mississauga (OHL) scored early in the second period and Quinton Howden (Oakbank, Man./Moose Jaw, WHL) scored late, and only a missed penalty shot by Sutch prevented the game from being tied after 40 minutes. With the momentum clearly swinging in its favour, White came out flying in period three, hitting a pair of posts behind Red netminder Louis Domingue (Mont St-Hilaire, Que./Moncton, QMJHL), who turned aside all 12 shots he faced in the final period and 19 of the 20 directed his way overall. Despite managing only four shots in the final 20 minutes it was Red who had the period’s only goal as Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Plymouth, OHL) added an insurance marker with 5:17 to go to provide the final margin of victory. The 40 players in camp have only one chance left to impress the coaching staff before the final 22-player roster is announced on Tuesday afternoon. The puck drops for the third and final intersquad game at noon on Tuesday at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. |
