Media Three Stars of the Day

DAY 7 – SATURDAY, APRIL 27,

1. Sabrina Picard (G) – Ontario
Consistent netminder Sabrina Picard of Hearst, Ont., again makes the cut for media star of the day, making 33 huge saves over three periods of play to help the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) start off strong in the gold medal game, and eventually earn a 2-0 lead in the third period, and kept up her fight between the posts despite an onslaught of shots from LHFDQ Nord (Québec) late in the game, to play a key role in earning her team silver medal bragging rights.

2. Valerie Lamenta (G) - Québec
Goaltender Valerie Lamenta of Montreal, Que., remained calm, cool and confident between the posts for LHFDQ Nord (Québec) – and recovered quickly from an early Ontario power play goal – to make 24 saves over three periods of play and help lead her team to a first-ever Esso Cup gold medal for her team, and for a team representing Québec.

3. Elizabeth Salyn (F) – Pacific
Forward Elizabeth Salyn of Edmonton, Alta., scored the lone goal of the game – a beauty midway through the third period – to give the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) a 1-0 win the Regina Rebels (West) and become the bronze medal game hero in what was a highly emotional game for the five-time Esso Cup contenders.


DAY 6 – FRIDAY, APRIL 26,

1. Sabrina Picard  (G) – Ontario
Sabrina Picard of Hearst, Ont., proved to be a big star for the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) once again, as her teammates emulated her confidence between the posts to skate to an incredible 5-1 upset over the undisputed team to beat the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific), and earn their first-ever berth into an Esso Cup gold medal game.

2. Chloe Dion (F) – Ontario
Chloe Dion of North Bay, Ont., was also named player of the game for the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario), setting up her team’s first goal of the game to tie it up at 5:46 in the first, following up with a goal of her own midway through the period, and also assisting North Bay’s fourth goal late in the second to keep up the offensive pace that allowed her team to come out on top 5-1 over the Edmonton Thunder and advance to the gold medal game in Burnaby.

3. Sabrina Picard  (G) – Ontario
Sabrina Picard of Hearst, Ont., also faced 25 shots en route to leading the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) to its impressive 5-1 preliminary win over five-time Esso Cup returnees the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific), shutting down some great Edmonton chances to keep the puck out of her net at all costs.


DAY 5 – THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013,

1. Kelsey Bohay (F) – West
Kesley Bohay (Regina, Sask.) scored twice in a row during the second period Thursday to help the Regina Rebels (West) defeat Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic) 2-1, an important victory that earned her team a third win and a spot in semifinals. Her first goal came at 3:11 in the middle frame, and she followed up with her second of the game at 16:21 to make it a 2-0 lead that gave Regina the edge it needed over Halifax Metro for the remainder of the game.

2. Amy Boucher (F) - Pacific
Amy Boucher of Edmonton, Alta., proved to be glue that kept that the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) together on the ice in her team’s 3-2 regulation win over LHFDQ Nord (Quebec), assisting a goal in the last two seconds of the first period and assisting another midway through the third period to help keep her team undefeated and at the top of the Esso Cup standings.

3. Latica Castillo (G) – Host
Netminder Latica Castillo of Surrey, B.C., gets her second straight media star of the day honours, again playing a pivotal role in what kept host team the Fraser Valley Phantom in the game, and even giving the underdog squad a strong chance at skating away with a win, letting just one goal in against the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) and facing 25 shots over the course of the game.


DAY 4 – WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2013,

1. Latica Castillo  (G) – Host
Latica Castillo of Surrey, B.C., faced an impressive 38 shots, letting in just one goal, in what was a truly stellar performance between the posts, to help the Fraser Valley Phantom (Host) stay in the game against Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic), and earn its first win of the tournament, for a much-needed morale booster that could not only give Fraser Valley more confidence at this national championship, but also a fighting chance at making it to semifinals.

2. Alexandra Poznikoff (F) – Pacific
Alexandra Poznikoff of Edmonton, Alta., opened and closed the scoring to help the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) ensure a 5-4 OT win over the Regina Rebels (West), scoring the first goal of the game at 8:51 on a power play and notching the last goal of the game in the final 25 seconds to tie it up at four-apiece and send it into the extra frame, ultimately giving her team the chance to get the additional three points, and maintain first place in Esso Cup standings.

3. Teah Anderson (F) – West
Teah Anderson of Regina, Sask., helped the Regina Rebels (West) maintain momentum throughout an intense and closely played game against the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific), notching one goal late in the first and another on a power play early in the second to give her team a 2-1 lead. Anderson and her teammates made it clear that despite a 5-4 OT loss in the end, the game between two competitive, tough western Canadian squads could have ended in favour of either side by the time the final whistle blew.


DAY 3 – TUESDAY, APRIL 23, 2013,

1. Chloe Sanderson (G) – Pacific
Chloe Sanderson of Edmonton, Alta., stopped all three shots in the shootout, and faced 32 pucks between the posts, to backstop the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) to 5-4 win over the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario), and first place in 2013 Esso Cup standings, in what was arguably the most exciting game so far on the ice in Burnaby.

2. Jessica Healey (D) – Pacific
Blueliner Jessica Healey of Edmonton, Alta., opened and closed the scoring in a 5-4 shootout win for the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) over the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario,), sparking a comeback for her team by notching one in the last 35 seconds of the first period, and scoring the lone goal of a six-player shootout to seal the deal, and another three points for her team in the Esso Cup standings.

3. Audrey Belzile (F) – Québec
Forward Audrey Belzile of St-Hyacinthe, Que., notched a hat trick to help lead the LHFDQ Nord (Québec) to an impressive 8-1 win over Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic), opening the scoring at 6:39 in the first, scoring another before the period was up, and adding another in the third to help put her team at a solid fourth place in 2013 Esso Cup standings.


DAY 2 – MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2013,

1. Eve-Audrey Picard  (F) – Quebec
Forward Eve-Audrey of Longueuil, Que., scored two of five goals en route to an LHFDQ Nord (Quebec) 5-1 win over host team the Fraser Valley Phantom, notching one at 15:45 in in the first and another at 12:16 in the second to stand out on the ice – and on the scoreboard – as a powerhouse up front at the 2013 Esso Cup in Burnaby, B.C.

2. Corie Jacobson (D) – Ontario
North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) defender Corie Jacobson of Warren, Ont., earned her second straight 2013 Esso Cup star of the day honours, scoring the first of two goals in the shootout that gave her team a 2-1 edge over the Regina Rebels (West), and another three points in the season. Her goal ensured the swayed shootout momentum to Ontario, leading to North Bay’s second straight win in Burnaby.

3. Mikaeli Cavell (D) – Pacific
Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) captain Makaeli Cavell of Edmonton, Alta., helped her team to a 4-1 win over Metro Halifax Boston Pizza (Atlantic) on Monday, assisting the first goal just 14 seconds into the game for an early lead and assisting Amy Boucher of, also of Edmonton, for a second time in the same game at 6:15 in the third, proving she’s not only a leader on the ice, but she’s a true team player.


DAY 1 – SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 2013,

1. Corie Jacobson (D) – Ontario
Blueliner Corie Jacobson of Warren, Ont., scored two of three goals to help boost the North Bay Ice Boltz (Ontario) to a 3-0 shutout win over Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic) during the opening game of the 2013 Esso Cup. Both goals came in the third, the first at 4:02 in the period and the next just over 10 minutes later, giving Ontario its first three points in the standings.

2. Emma Waldenberger (F) – West
Forward Emma Waldenberger of Moose Jaw, Sask., proved to be quite the offensive force for the Regina Rebels (West), lining up a beautiful shot in the middle of the first period, and assisting the third goal on a power play to help make it 3-1 over LHFDQ Nord (Quebec) before the first 20 minutes was done. She helped Regina keep its fast-paced up through all three periods of play to ensure a 5-2 win.

3. Chelsea Wilson (F) – Host
Forward Chelsea Wilson of Langley, B.C., played a pivotal role in keeping host team the Fraser Valley Phantom competitive when up against five-time Esso Cup returnees the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific), scoring midway through the first and halfway through the second, for both of her teams goals in a tough but well-fought 4-2 loss in front of local fans at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby.
