2021 IIHF World Junior Championship

Our Game: Road to the 2021 World Juniors

A TELUS original documentary

There is something unique and special about Canada’s relationship with the World Juniors. Truthfully, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when we became so passionate about watching Team Canada compete for gold. Sure, we’ve always loved hockey played at the highest levels. But the World Juniors has become a sporting tradition like no other. For those two weeks over the Christmas holidays, pro hockey loyalties are set aside so we can all support one team: Team Canada. Which is why for 2020, a year where we lost so much to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to find a way to stage this beloved event. And that’s exactly what we did.

Our Game, a three-part docuseries presented by TELUS, is a celebration of this oh-so-unique edition of the World Juniors. From selection camp to pre-competition and preliminary round matchups to the quarters, semis and medal games, this project transports hockey fans inside the World Juniors bubble to experience Team Canada’s journey from a whole new angle.

Episode 1: Selection Camp

Follow Team Canada behind the scenes at selection camp in Red Deer, Alta., where it begins its preparations to defend gold on home ice at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton. See how Bowen Byram, Peyton Krebs, Kaiden Guhle, Kirby Dach and Braden Schneider prepare for camp during the pandemic without a junior season and deal with an unexpected two-week quarantine.

Episode 2: Preliminary Round

Team Canada transitions from Red Deer to Edmonton and prepares for its scheduled pre-tournament games against Sweden and Russia, followed by preliminary round match-ups in Group A against Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland and Finland. Learn about life in the bubble from our players and go behind the scenes with the TSN panel – Gord Miller, Ray Ferraro, Bob McKenzie, James Duthie and Craig Button – to hear their perspective on the unique circumstances of the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Episode 3: Medal Rounds (coming April 22)

After successfully earning top spot in Group A, Team Canada has its sights set on gold as it enters the medal round and faces stiff competition in the quarterfinals against Czech Republic, semifinals against Russia and gold medal game against the U.S. At the conclusion of the tournament, our players disperse across North America to join their club teams and reflect back on their World Juniors experience.
