HEFFORD’S SHOOTOUT MAGIC LEADS CANADA TO EXHIBITION WIN OVER
U.S. VIERUMÄKI, Finland – Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) scored once in regulation time and once in the shootout as Canada’s National Women’s Team topped the United States 4-3 in an exhibition game Monday, avenging its loss to the Americans just 24 hours earlier. The U.S. beat Canada 4-0 on Sunday in a round-robin game for both at the IIHF 12 Nations Women’s Tournament. Early on it looked as if the three-time defending world champions would make it two in a row over Canada, as Hilary Knight scored on the Americans’ first two shots for a 2-0 lead just 1:55 in, leading to an early exit for Canadian goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont./Burlington, CWHL). But Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) got Canada on the board less than a minute after Knight’s second goal and Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne, Man./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA) pulled the Canadians even at 7:41, completing a wild opening eight minutes. The teams traded goals late in the second period, with Hefford answering a power play goal from Brianna Decker, before the goaltenders took over, with Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Providence College, HE) and American counterpart Jessie Vetter stopping a combined 31 shots between the third period and overtime, giving way to a shootout. Hefford and Kelli Stack traded goals in the first two rounds before Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Boston University, HE) beat Vetter for the game winner in round six. Canada gets back to 12 Nations action on Tuesday when it takes on the host Finns (11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT). |
