Canada faced two consecutive penalty kills and responded in kind, scoring a shorthanded goal as Jarret Stoll, of Yorkton, SK caused the turnover and then converted a Steve Ott pass behind the Russian goaltender, Andrei Medvedev. Canada made it 2-0, with specialty teams coming through again.
On a powerplay, Stephen Weiss took a perfect pass from Jason Spezza and fired one past Spezza. Canadian goaltender Pascal Leclaire was called upon to make some terrific saves as Canada was outshot 9-5, but left the ice after the first period with a 2-0 lead.
Russia scored twice in the second while Canada responded once on a Mike Cammalleri marker, as Canada led 3-2 through 40 minutes.
Jared Aulin and Chuck Kobasew ended all Russian hopes of coming back with goals in the third, as Canada goes to 3-0 with a 5-2 victory over Russia.
Canada faces Finland on Sunday, December 30th in its next game at the World Junior Hockey Championship.
