QUICK GOALS PACE CANADA TO VICTORY

LEKSAND, SWEDEN – Two quick goals late in the second period helped Canada’s National Women’s Team defeat Finland 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the 4 Nations Cup.

With the scored tied 1-1, Correne Bredin (Warburg, AB/Strathmore, WWHL) scored at 18:04. Then, with six seconds left in the period, Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/Univ. of New Hampshire, HE) scored on a partial breakaway, going forehand to backhand and sliding the puck past Finland’s Maija Hassinen.

Team Canada opened the scoring at 2:52 of the first period, when Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON/Ottawa, CWHL) tipped in a shot from the point by Colleen Sostorics (Kennedy, SK/Calgary, WWHL). That goal came with Canada on a 5-on-3 power play.
Finland, which was outshot 43-23 in the game, tied it at 1-1 at 9:02 of the second, when Mari Pehkonen’s wrist shot beat Canada’s Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB/Grant MacEwan, ACAC).

Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL), Canada’s captain for this tournament, completed the scoring with a hard slap shot from the top of the circle at 11:06 of the third.

Canada (1-0) is back in action on Thursday, when it faces Team USA. The game will be the second of three round-robin games for both teams.
